Is It Time?

When is the best time to come in for a session?

This is a question I frequently hear and it is a fair one. My response may not always be satisfying. Not because I am intentionally being difficult but because one of the goals of our work together is for YOU to be able to "feel, " or to "know" when the time is right for YOU. For some, this will be an ongoing part of their routine and is preventative. Much like brushing your teeth or scheduling an oil change and tire rotation for your car. The more regular the practice, the more balanced the system. For others, a session will be in response to something happening in their life: an acute injury or recovery from surgery or stress. In this case, it is beneficial to schedule a few sessions in short succession while the body is working hard to heal and recover and then space a few out over time to be sure the system maintains balance.

To be honest, there really isn't a wrong or bad time for a session ( generally speaking-there are of course a few specific exceptions). The system always benefits from a session. A bad time is one that feels forced.

The best time for a session is one that YOU choose. Your time, money, and energy are valuable resources, and scheduling and receiving a session should feel like a good investment of those resources.

If after thinking about it you still don't feel like you have an answer, I offer you the exercise below. It helps you to settle into your body and get out of your brain. At the very least, allow for 5 minutes.

Sit in a chair with both feet on the floor-preferably in a quiet place

Place your hands, gently, on your thighs or abdomen

Close your eyes and begin to notice your breath. Allow the in and out to lengthen and deepen without forcing.

Do this for at least 30 seconds

Place at least one hand over your heart and continue to breathe -no forcing-

Ask your system the question you have. What is for your greatest and highest good?

Wait for a minute or two to see what your system provides for information

You may get a clear answer

You may not get a specific answer, but when you later begin to think/process the decision, it will come with more ease and confidence

Trust your system knows what is best at this time

Open your eyes and end with a breath

This exercise can be used any time you need to ground and connect with your body and can be shortened or lengthened as needed.

Keep in mind that this approach applies to many of the decisions/choices and experiences we encounter in our daily lives. It is good to take a pause before scheduling commitments and activities to ask your system if it is a good fit for the present time.
